In brief
Hydrogeology deals with the underground water resource: the water that we draw from wells and springs and then flows from the taps in our homes.
A valuable asset in whose the Ticino is rich, but which, nevertheless, creates a conflict between the needs of health protection and land use.
Switzerland, like every other advanced country, has a legislation at Federal and Cantonal levels that protects the groundwater and poses limits to the land use destination as a function of distance from the sources and sinks.
The IST is active on these issues by participating to the Cantonal and Federal programs for the groundwater quality monitoring and conducting campaigns for the measurements of levels and extent of groundwater sources.
With the help of the Geographic Information Systems, which are presented below, manages the data collected and makes the information available to public and private users by Internet services, or in a more traditional way, by thematic maps.
The IST also performs applied research aimed at improving water management by integrated modeling, track testing and geophysical investigations. The IST provides advice to the Cantonal Government in enforcement of the Water Protection Law (LPAc), Water Protection Decree (OPAC) and Environment Law (LPAm).
