Hydrological modelling with GIS free and open source
In the framework of the Interreg IIIA project "Development of a system for hydrogeological risk management in the Lake Maggiore" an hydrological model "HydroFOSS" has been developed, this is the result of a series of new hydrological modules (evapotranspiration, vegetation interceprion, snow melt and accumulation, hypodermic, surface and river runoff) embedded in GRASS.
HydroFOSS (Hydrological Free & Open Source Software) is a rainfall-runoff model:
- Distributed: it describes the fields of hydrological variables (raster maps);
- Physically based: all the variables have physical meanning;
- Continuous: it process the solutions in successive time step;
- Modular: composed by the combination of different independent modules that simulate the individual physical processes involved;
- Integrated: fully integrated in the GRASS GIS environment.

The role of dams in the formation of solid
As part of the Action 3 of the Interreg III Italy-Switzerland (2000-2006), this study evaluates the effects of flooding trough the regulation of an interconnected systems of artificial reservoirs in the valley of the Maggia and of the Verbano Lake. The project took into account the effects of the management of hydropower plants, trying to assess the possible benefits against the cost of using a portion of the basin capacity for the purpose of mitigating the risk of flooding.
