MaVal: simulation of interactions between surface and groundwater in the Valle Maggia
The aim of this work is to assess the influence that an increase in the minimum flow imposed on Bignasco, at the confluence between the Bavona and Lavizzara, may have on the water table height in Valle Maggia. This problem arose after the concession given for the exploitation of hydropower in the Maggia and its tributaries on the 10 March 1949. In fact this exploitation of groundwater interferes with fishing and with the conservation of natural beauty and landscape. The fundamental difficulties encountered in the implementation of the model are due to the fact that, for a long part of its course, the river is in contact with the groundwater and therefore is the same aquifer that feeds the river and there is no infiltration of the river against ground. The problem arises because it is difficult to determine what is the entityá of the groundwater contribution to the river.

Modelling the expansion of debris flows in conoid
Within the CatchRisk project a conceptual model to reproduce the expansion cone of debris flows has been designed and implemented. The model reproduces the spread in a simplified manner by using the principles of the probabilistic Monte Carlo method and the multiple-flow direction approach. The flow velocity calculation has been derived from the avalanches dynamics, while the material deposition follows a simple linear model, based on local speed and slope. The model, developed in Visual Basic, is embedded in a GIS and is currently used for the hazard zonation at municipal or regional level.
